MARIA LITHERLAND

Maria Litherland is primarily concerned with memories, places, and how they affect identity. Maria’s interest stems from having lived in England, Germany, and the USA and having travelled extensively throughout her childhood. Her current practice focuses on the processes of memory making and retrieval and she has become increasingly interested in how and why we misremember or have false memories. Our sense of identity is defined by our memories. Yet how do memories that are entirely or partially false affect our identity? We are often not even aware that our memories are inaccurate or false. Maria attempts to explore this relationship in her work by creating installations that engage different senses and invite the viewer to explore and reflect on the process of remembering and misremembering.
