CAMILA KARIMOVA

Camila Karimova’s practice tries to exploit the Chinese authority and their mistreatment of the Uyghur people. Camila is able to voice out supporting the Uyghurs, while metaphorically publicising the Chinese government and their suppression of speech. She is mainly inspired by Ai Weiwei’s work of the ‘Sunflower Seeds’, in doing so she uses the already formed symbolic language that ties with the seeds however, she also links subtle reference of Uyghur culture while showing awareness of the current situation in Xinjiang, China. Not only does she challenge the authority, but she challenges the audiences thoughts and perceptions on ‘how much do we really know what is actually occurring in our world today?’.
